There is a single fleeting moment each Fall in the mountains on the final cloudless day of the year — just before winter edges out the last of Autumn’s bounty — when the days get short and the nights come early. It might last an afternoon. You might blink and never know it’s come and gone. But if it were possible to capture that moment and spend an evening suspended in its warmth, Blowing Rock, North Carolina, Bride Erin Hunt’s wedding did just that.
Erin, and her mother, Hannah, make up the two-person team behind Blowing Rock floral design company, Golden Thistle Design. Together, the duo designed an unforgettable Autumn wedding that married Erin’s vision of an intimate, whimsical environment with artistic celestial undertones.
Erin met Husband-to-be Cam online, and the couple were long-distance for the majority of their dating relationship. Erin was a single mother with a five-year-old daughter, Emma. One of the most special parts of Erin and Cam’s love story was the love Emma had for Cam. She was ready for him to be her stepdad, so Erin and Emma are the ones who picked out a ring together and proposed to Cam. Under the pretense of a birthday dinner for Cam, Erin took him to a private subterranean wine cellar and proposed to him there using a Van Gogh postcard with Van Gogh’s Starry Night. At the wedding, the couple would use a similar card for their wedding favor.
Erin’s donned a Saros Gown by Willowby by Watters. Delicately placed floral embroidery covers Saros’s ethereal long sleeves and A-line figure. The contrasting lining brings the gown’s graceful flora and fauna pattern to life.
The food was a seasonal display of sweet and savory combos. An intricately styled and curated charcuterie board for cocktail hour with a champagne and cocktail sugar cube wall. A pecan-encrusted honey dijon chicken and roast top sirloin with horseradish sauce for dinner was paired with a mashed potato bar for comfort and warmth on a cool rainy fall day.
Warm and creamy blooms nestled into dried and bleached textures. The colors were primarily neutrals with washes of spiced and honey tones along with warm golds and coppers to reflect the couple’s favorite season: Autumn. Touches of black brought in an element of contrast and a nod to the night sky, as one of
the couples’ interests is astronomy, the stars and the moon. Engraved within the groom’s ring, from the bride, “My sun, my moon, and all my stars”.
A traditional Eastern Orthodox Christian Ceremony sung by the sister of the bride in traditional Byzantine chant. A star chart of the position of the celestial host on the night of the wedding was on display during the reception. It was on display with a hand-drawn charcoal portrait of the bride.
Yellow ginkgo leaves were a very important sentimental detail that was used throughout the wedding day. They represent longevity, profound endurance, and strength, all things that were very important to both the bride and groom and represented their lives both separately and together. The dried florals for the groom’s boutonniere were hand-picked by Erin’s daughter, Emma from Bass Lake in Blowing Rock.
